One of the most common types of cyber fraud recently is fake cargo SMS. As a result of the victim clicking on the link and providing card information, his/her account is emptied.
Typical Scenario
- An SMS message "Your cargo is lost, click" is received
- Redirected to a fake site
- Card information is requested
- 3D Secure SMS is intercepted (proxy)
- Account is emptied
Related Crimes
- TCK art.158/1-f fraud with information system (3-10 years)
- TCK art.245 bank/credit card crimes
- TCK art.135-136 processing of personal data
What the Victim Should Do - First Hours
- Immediate call to the bank, blocking the card having it
- If it is a 3D Secure transaction, requesting its refund
- Keeping the phone screenshot + SMS record
- Making a criminal complaint to the police station / public prosecutor's office
- Initiating the bank objection procedure
Bank Liability
In a 3D Secure transaction, the bank is deemed to have provided protection as a rule. However, in cases where phishing is obvious, the Supreme Court may attribute partial fault to the bank.
Prevention
- Use the official application of the cargo company
- DO NOT click on the SMS link
- Do not enter your card information on fake sites
- Be careful of domains such as "Official cargo company @ptt.gov.tr" (for fakes). (such as @ptt-gov-tr.com)
