Bribery, Extortion and Embezzlement Crimes (TCK art.247-252)

The main crimes committed by public officials by abusing their duties are bribery, extortion and embezzlement.

Embezzlement (TCK art. 247)

A public official who embezzles himself or someone else's property, the possession of which has been transferred to him due to his duty or the property for which he is obliged to protect and supervise, 5-12 years imprisonment.

Extortion. (TCK art. 250)

A public official abusing the influence of his position to force or persuade a person in order to benefit himself or others: 5-10 years (persuasion) and 5-10 years (force).

A public official's duty Gaining benefit by agreeing with a person to do or not to do a job contrary to the requirements: 4-12 years imprisonment.

Effective Regret

If the bribe giver and recipient make a report and return the bribe before the official authorities are informed about the situation, they can avoid punishment (TCK art. 254).
