Children born from Turkish-foreign marriages often have dual citizenship. The legal consequences are important.
Citizenship of the Child
- Turkish mother/father → Turkish citizen (TVK article 7)
- Citizen of the foreign mother/father's country according to its laws Registration for registration
- TR ID number is given
- Passport can be issued
Birth Abroad
- Birth notification to the Turkish consulate
- Dual citizenship registration
- Turkish passport
Military Service
- Turkish citizen son → obliged to do military service
- Overseas postponement/paid if alive
- Not within the scope of Blue Card
Marriage
- When the child reaches adulthood, the marriage decision is made on his/her own
- The laws of the two countries are applied differently
Name
- Turkish name is mandatory (TMK)
- Foreign name can be added (as middle name)
- Surname: father's
Education
- Education in Turkish schools in Türkiye
- Foreign diploma equivalence (if returned)
Supreme Court 2nd HD and 18th HD
2. HD adopts that, for dual citizen children, custody/education decisions will be made based on "the best interest of the child" and that preferences for living abroad will be evaluated individually.
